Color Match

Why Do Other Stair Treads Look So Different from the Flooring they are supposed to match?

At Treads Plus, we often get calls from frustrated homeowners who purchased competitor stair treads that were supposed to match their flooring… and didn’t.

Here’s a real example: A customer reached out after having stair treads installed that were marketed as a "color match" to her LVP flooring. Once installed, it was clear—they didn’t match at all. She came to us for help. We were able to provide her with Stair Noses that perfectly matched her flooring. But, how did this happen, and what went wrong?

Why does this happen?

Poor color matching happens for two main reasons...

1. Color Sharing

Many tread suppliers use “color sharing,” meaning one tread is marketed to match several flooring colors. The problem, is that if one tread is trying to match five different shades, it won’t match any of them particularly well.

2. How They're made

Most stair treads on the market are made by scanning an image of flooring, stretching it to fit the tread dimensions, and printing it onto a paper that is glued to an MDF core. This process introduces huge variability. Lighting, printing inconsistencies, and environmental conditions can all throw off the color. This rarely results in a true match.

The Solution: Treads Plus

At Treads Plus, we don’t scan and print imitations. We do something much better:

We use the actual luxury vinyl planks (LVP) to build your stair noses. That means that you get a perfect match—every time.
